Music Keeps Me Spirited: Big Little Lies
Eeeeeeeek! Did you watch the finale to Big Little Lies on Sunday?!!! I haven't read the book but I got sucked in to this show the very first episode. I'll be honest, I was hooked just with the opening sequence that plays at the beginning of every episode. That song by Michael Kiwanuka is just mesmerizing. Whitt and I are also big fans of his song Love and Hate which you should also check out. Or in the words of Whitt, he wants "ba-da-da-da"
The music for this show is clearly the fifth main character right along side Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley and Laura Dern. Although Reese Witherspoon's daughter in the show, Chloe, has a big part in "playing" the music. Think of her as a mini music executive with knowledge of every different style of music spanning at least the last 50 years. Some of my favorites from the show were, Leon Bridges "River", Elvis' "Pocketful of Rainbows", "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac. Then there's Janis Joplin, with her recognizable voice singing "Call on Me", Alabama Shakes with their own sound, yet always recognizable in sound with "This Feeling". And to round out my favorite songs of the show is "Heartaches and Pain" by Charles Bradley and Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit". They all helped play out the scene or gave for some great foreshadowing with lyrics making you question what was to be. No matter what, the music stays with you.
I know Mother, "I thought this was a design blog." The setting of the show is in Monterey, California so you know the homes will be something special. Each of the character's homes definitely tells a lot about them.
First you have Laura Dern's character, Renata, with the house on the hill and a terrace to stand and look at everyone below her. She's the working mom and has been financially successful, yet feels judged for being a working mom.
Next you have Celeste cast by Nicole Kidman. I don't know if I've ever seen Nicole do such a skin baring show or movie before. I wasn't quite sure if she was going to be able to pull off some of "those" scenes but she did great. Wait, that sounds kinda bad. Let's just say if you've seen the show you know what I'm talking about.
Her house is somewhat of a treehouse. Think of it as far up, hidden from branches and watching eyes because she has a secret. As with every marriage, no matter if it's on HBO or your next door neighbor, nothing is as it seems from the outside looking in. Actually that's kinda what the entire show is about, outside appearances.
Lastly there's Reese Witherspoon's character, Madeline. My cousin texted me a few weeks ago telling me he was watching the show and for some reason her "character reminds me of you for some reason". I told him it's because she curses a lot and doesn't take shit. She too of course has this outward appearance that everything is perfect in her home, but of course nothing is perfect.
Her home is the most traditional of all the houses. This house and it's interior could be in any town and would fit right in. Her house sits on the beach and clearly the waves and the ocean play a part of every person who lives in it. The waves seem to soak you, digging deep into your soul and pulling all your deepest thoughts out.
Thank you so much for reading! If the show doesn't seem like something you'd enjoy you should still listen to the soundtrack. It will take you on a journey. I'm a big fan of red wine, music, and taking a musical ride.
